No Filipino died in the two powerful earthquakes that rocked northwest Iran Saturday, which killed 180 people and injured about 1,500 others.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Atty. Raul Hernandez told DZMM that no Filipino perished during the earthquakes, even as officials from Iran said casualty figures were expected to rise.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is still monitoring the situation of the almost 1,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Iran.
About 40 aftershocks hit the area, and six villages were destroyed while about 60 more sustained more than 50% damage.
According to the US Geological Survey, the first earthquake last Saturday was measured at 6.4 magnitude and struck 60 kilometers northeast of Tabriz city.
The second quake, measuring 6.3 magnitude, struck 49 kilometers northeast of Tabriz, 11 minutes later. — Reports from DZMM and Reuters.
