An official of the Episcopal Commission on Prison Pastoral Care (ECPPC) of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said that reviving the death penalty would not solve crimes.

ECPPC Executive Secretary Rodolfo Diamante said that those who are pushing for the imposition of the death penalty anew just want an immediate solution to the crimes.

He said what the government should do is to look at the problem of enforcing the law.

“Instead of looking at death penalty, they have to think of the other stages of the criminal justice system which starts from building up the case, arresting the perpetrators of the crime and seeing to it that they’ll be properly persecuted. The last stage is the death penalty,” Diamante explained.

He warned that if these are not strengthened, there will always be people being able to run away with the crime that they have committed.

Diamante added that the government should study and come up with a very strong crime prevention program.

With this, he urged those who are pushing for the death penalty to think of ways on how to prevent crime.

The issue on reviving the capital punishment has emerged in the midst of the brutal deaths of individuals engaged in car buy and sell business.
