The councilor of Burgos town who was critically wounded in a shooting incident along the highway in Narvacan town on Tuesday died a few hours while undergoing treatment in a Narvacan hospital.
Doctors failed to save the life of Burgos town councilor Delfin Escobar Jr., 39, who sustained one gun shot wound in the face fired by one of two unidentified suspects riding in tandem on a motorcycle.
The remains of Escobar now lie in state at his residence in Barangay Ambugat, Burgos while a manhunt for his killers is now being spearheaded by the Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) of the police.
It was learned that Escobar was the latest victim of killers riding in tandem on motorcycles in Ilocos Sur.
The gunman opened fire on Escobar at about 7:15 a.m. just after alighting from his car in front of a vulcanizing shop along the national highway in Barangay San Jose, Narvacan.
The shooting happened after Escobar drove his children to school in Narvacan. Before the shooting, he dropped by a vulcanizing shop as his car tires needed some air.
Ilocos Sur police director Senior Superintendent Eduardo Dopale, who formed the investigation task group, said the gunman used a caliber .45 pistol as evidenced by recovered empty shell at the crime scene.
Escobar, a farmer-businessman, was a Sangguniang Kabataan federation president. He was only in his first term as a regular member of the town council at the time of his killing.
Dopale said the SITG will focus on the investigation of the incident so that the perpetrators and the mastermind could be tracked down and arrested.
He said a hot pursuit operation against the suspects is still going on.
