Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog here is eying a hanging bridge over the Iloilo River in a move to ease up traffic in the central business district of the city proper and shorten travel distance and time from the Loboc area in Bo. Obrero to Zamora Melliza street and eventually to the commercial port area here.

The Loboc area is a site of the Iloilo International Port and container yard and a shortcut road of vehicles passing the Iloilo coastal road from northern Iloilo.

Expressing enthusiasm over the proposed project, Mabilog, chairman of the regional development council Infrastructure Committee, said the project will be deliberated by his committee and to be submitted to the Regional Development Council for approval.

Even if it takes several years for the realization of the project, the city has started at least on a major road and bridge project beneficial to the constituents.

If approved by the region’s planning body, the project will then be submitted to the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) for possible line-up for national or foreign funding assistance.

The hanging bridge project will be over the Iloilo River but near the Iloilo Strait and will be instrumental in diverting and easing up traffic congestion in the city proper.
