The Philippine Navy (PN) is now gearing towards modernization, according to Rear Admiral Alexander Pama.

Pama was the guest of honor during the Paraw Regatta Festival here over the weekend.

“We really have to improve our industry. By 2020 we will have a navy that a maritime nation can be proud of,” he said, citing the Philippines Navy Modernization Program.

Pama said they are very thankful to President Benigno Aquino III who is pushing for the modernization of the Philippine Navy.

He said they are now strengthening their advocacy to raise public awareness of the maritime industry.

He disclosed that this year, they are looking forward to some 1,000 recruits joining both the navy and the marines.

Recruitment is open for individuals 18-23 years old with at least 72 college units for those who want to become sailors and a bachelor’s degree for officer positions.

oh yes lets talk and talk… and lets buy some old shit from the 60s to replace some old shit from the 70s.. so by 2020 we will have a navy our maritime nation can be proud of. 2010 was supposed to be the 2nd horizon of air force modernization which is the territorial defense stage, and yet all they got are a bunch of propeller trainers and a bunch of old ass hueys… thats bullshit… now for the PN they bought a big ass antic to replace an antic. an old ass coast guard ship while the royal thai navy is already making plans for a 2nd air craft carrier. shit even a poor n unindustrialized country like ghana already received 2 albatros class guided missile attack craft… n we buy an old ass coast guard patrol.. seems to be a good step for a 2020 plan in which there is only 9yrs. left

Modernizing the Philippine Navy may take a while if budget constraint prevents it. In the meantime, let us welcome back the US Armed Forces to our shores as a preventive measures to counter the Chinese aggressive behaviors.

One recommendation that I strongly urge to be consider is shopping for some naval vessels sitting at the mothball yards of the US NAVY and select some seaworthy vessels that can be refitted for immediate service. These warships are well-preserved and make only take months to install new weaponry for active service. During the activation of the ships to be acquired, PN personnel may be sent to the yard(s) where it is being refitted to familiarize themselves.

To shorten the modernization period, I respectfully suggest that shopping around for some naval warships at the US Navy mothball yards would hasten the project.

Some of these warships are still seaworthy, and can be refitted with modern weaponry in matter of months for immediate service.

I recommend that PN personnel be sent to where the ships are being refurbish so they can initially manned the ships to familiarize themselves.

In the meantime, during the modernization period, let us welcome port visits of our allied nations, and perhaps allow the US Navy to establish their home port one in Mindanao, one in Palawan, and back to Subic Naval Base.
