Mexican champion Jorge Arce is not as impressed with Nonito Donaire Jr. despite the latter’s recent string of victories.
The Mexican brawler, nicknamed El Travesio or “The Mischievous one”, said Donaire has largely been successful against boxers who are afraid to fight.
“I’m not impressed. He is not the monster they believe he is. What happens is that [the opponents] have too much respect, they pull punches, start to survive and allow him to come on,” Arce said in Boxing Scene.
Boxing promoter Bob Arum is pushing for the Donaire-Arce fight after the “Filipino Flash’s” successful title defense against Toshiaki Nishioka last Saturday.
Donaire retained his World Boxing Organization (WBO) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) super bantamweight titles against Nishioka.
He also won the World Boxing Council (WBC) Diamond belt and the RING Magazine super bantamweight crown in the process.
But Arce belittled the quality of opponents who fought Donaire.
“I think Donaire has faced fighters who are afraid. I’m not going to have any respect,” he said.
Donaire was supposed to fight Arce this month.
But the Mexican overpriced himself and settled for a tune-up fight against Mauricio Martinez instead.
Arce won the tune-up by unanimous decision last September.
The Mexican said he would be pleased to fight Donaire provided that he’s given the purse he deserves.
“I would be happy to take that fight but I hope I get the price [I'm asking for]. I’m not asking for the pearls of the virgin. I’m demanding just what I think the fight is worth,” Arec said.
