Herrera finishes last in heat, bows out of Games

Track athlete Rene Herrera finished dead last in Heat 1 of the 5,000-meters event, finishing with a time of 14 minutes and 44.11 seconds, to bow out of the 2012 London Games.

It was a new personal best for Herrera, who was making his Olympic debut in London.

Hayle Ibrahimov of Azerbaijan topped the heat with a time of 13:25.23, followed by Isiah Kiplangat Koech of Kenya.

Mohamed Farah of Great Britan was third with a time of 13:26.00, followed by the United States’ Lomong Lopez (13:26.16).

Hagos Gebrhiwet of Ethiopia rounded up the qualifiers with a time of 13:26.16 as well.

Herrera wound up in last place in a field of 42.

Herrera’s target time going into the event was 14 minutes and 10 seconds. His previous personal best was 14 minutes and 51 seconds.
